Drink One Of These Pre-Workout Options Before The Gym

On today’s episode of Live Lean TV, I’m sharing the best pre-workout drink options for energy before the gym.

If you’re just not feeling the energy to go to the gym, does this mean you shouldn’t go?

Come on.

Are You Lacking Energy During Your Workouts?

If you need energy, these pre-workout drink options will help give you an energy boost.

But are they good for you?

Let’s face it, if you’re not moving your body, good luck Living Lean.

First of all, I admit, I like caffeine.

Benefits Of Caffeine

Although certain people may react to caffeine differently, here are the various benefits of caffeine, especially before a workout:

  • helps improve focus
  • keeps you more alert
  • makes you feel more motivated
  • gives a nice boost of energy
  • helps increase fat burning
  • lifting heavy weights just seems easier when you’re amped up

Do you feel me?

So let’s start by covering the more natural pre-workout drink options, then I’ll share a few pre-workout supplement options.

Pre-Workout Drink Option #1: Coffee

Note: I am the total opposite of being a “coffee snob”. When I was living by myself, my go-to source of coffee was instant coffee. Now that I’m married to Jessica, we usually have drip coffee or cold brew coffee 😂.

Studies so that consuming coffee before workouts can:

  • increase endurance during training
  • decrease muscle soreness post training
  • increase fat burning

I always go with black coffee with a packet of a natural sweetener, like stevia.

The energy jolt from the coffee hits me good and I don’t feel the energy crash often associated with some energy drinks.

Based on this, coffee is one of my favorite pre-workout drink options for energy before the gym.

But if you don’t like coffee, an alternative source for caffeine before your workout is green tea.

Pre-Workout Drink Option #2: Green Tea

Although green tea is not as strong as coffee, green tea will still help elevate fat burning.

Consuming green tea will also help increase antioxidants in your body.

Increasing your consumption of antioxidants will help lower the inflammation caused by your workout.

Even though you’re doing a good thing by working out, your workouts will increase inflammation in your body.

This is why it’s important to load up on antioxidant rich foods and drinks, to decrease the free radicals in your body.

Alright, let’s move on to some more hardcore pre-workout drink options for energy before the gym.

These aren’t for everybody, but I just want to give you some options.

Pre-Workout Drink Option #3: Pre-Workout Supplement Powders And Drinks

I’ve tried a lot of pre-workout supplements.

Some good, some bad, and some so so.

In my experience, here’s the thing with supplements.

Everyone’s body reacts differently.

For example, some people are highly sensitive to caffeine, while others can chug 8 cups of coffee in 4 hours, and not feel a thing.

So just like with movie reviews, take supplement reviews for what they’re worth.

It’s always best to test things out for yourself.

With that said, before my workouts, I am currently taking a powerful pre-workout supplement powder called Wake Up.

1. Performance:

I like this pre-workout powder supplement because it’s:

  • very powerful with 350mg caffeine per scoop
  • 0g of sugar and carbohydrates
  • flavored naturally with stevia

Note: If you’re new to pre-workout powders, I recommend you start with a 1/4 – 1/2 scoop to access your tolerance.

If I know I have a grueling workout coming up, but I’m not feeling energetic, this pre-workout really helps motivate and energize me.

It’s hard to describe, but some pre-workouts make you feel like you’re on top of the world with loads of energy.

Even though some people don’t like it, I love that feeling.

I usually take this pre-workout 15-30 minutes before my 10 minute drive to the gym.

By the time I get to the gym, I feel that “focused feeling” and am ready to go.

I also feel an increase in muscle endurance, so I can complete those last few reps and sets.

Performance: 9/10

2. Taste:

To me, taste isn’t as big of a deal as it may be to some.

In most cases, I look at food, drinks, and supplements as fuel.

It’s what my body requires for peak performance, thus taste is secondary.

Based on this, I’ll be quick with this rating since it doesn’t have a lot of weight in my mind.

Some pre-workout supplements use artificial sweeteners which I am not a fan of.

One of the big things I love about Wake Up, is it’s sweetened naturally with stevia.

Simply mix it with water and chug.

Taste: 8/10

Like I said earlier, supplements are very dependent on the person taking them, so you just have to test it on yourself.

Therefore, if you’re looking for more mental focus in the gym, more energy, and more endurance, here’s a link to try a tub of Wake Up! Unlimited Energy.

Pre-Workout Drink Option #4: Energy Drink

Lastly, a quick on the go pre-workout drink option, is an energy drink like a Rockstar or a Redbull.

You can buy an energy drink at any convenience store.

I’ve said it before, I don’t recommend drinking energy drinks everyday.

But I have been open in saying that, when I’m looking for a quick boost in energy, I will have an energy drink.

However, let me repeat, it’s not every day.

Again, I’m just giving you options.

If choice A is to skip your workout because you’re feeling lazy or choice B is to have an energy drink, and then go kill it in the gym, I’d choose B.

But I repeat, just not every single day.

Like always, I’m just being real and transparent with you.

Bottom Line On The Best Pre-Workout Drink Options For Energy

Those were a few of the best pre-workout drink options for energy.

For most people, I do recommend so form of caffeine prior to your workouts.

However, if you’re highly sensitive to caffeine, or you’re just naturally a bundle of energy, and you don’t need anymore, just do it the way you are.

Stick to drinking water and go kill your workout.

Speaking of water, make sure you’re consuming a lot of water before, during, and after your workout.

If you are training at night, try to limit the caffeine because your sleep will take a hit.

We all know sleep is key for those recovery gains.

  1. I found that if I drink even a little caffeine before working out my heart
pounds the whole time and it actually saps my energy. It happens even with
just a few sips of coffee and with no cardio such as running or elliptical.

  2. What do you recommend for a pre workout snack versus a drink? I usually
have a banana and a tablespoon or two of almond butter or string cheese and
an apple. Also, is it true to have a post workout snack/drink within 30
minutes of a workout? Thank you! And I love your videos!

  3. Muscle sport international lean preworkout revolution anabolic series
special edition YO! Damn thats good!

  4. Just subscribed. Your videos are awesome! I’ve been drinking WARRIOR HERS
    preworkout.

I recently been trying The Cliff Bar I couldnt run 4mins Str8 on The
    treadmill now I can Run 12mins + now…

  8. Rockstar and gas staion products are garbage there are better alternative’s
with nutrient’s to help boost your workout rockstar, redbull, redline are not
the way invest in a good preworkout. Never promote crap into your body even
for a quick boost. $38.99 costco for 60 servings 2 month supply decent pre
workout vs a rock star for $3 one shot. Brad i follow your living lean but
on this one its a fitness no take.

  9. You could take some spoonfuls of MCT or coconut oil for a caffeine-free
    choice. I’m a tea drinker, but I don’t purposefully drink it pre-workout. I
work out in the afternoon, so I’ve stopped having caffeine for the day by
    then.

  10. Hey Brad, how come you recommend green tea instead of black? black tea has
way higher amounts of caffeine, almost 50mg which is about half what you
    get from black coffee.

  11. Great post, Brad! I have been trying X2Performance and love it…I’d never used one (besides if my workout fell in the morning when I have coffee anyways) and it’s been awesome! Tried it back country skiing, in the gym, for long runs… Not jittery or a crash at all. Love how honestly you approached everything and cant wait to hear what you think about X2!

  12. I start every morning workout with Beachbody’s Energy & Endurance. It’s the only pre-workout I’ve tried that doesn’t make me jittery or even nauseous. Coffee doesn’t kick in fast enough for me. E&E only takes 10 minutes and it’s yummy (lemon-lime). I continue to test other products, but nothing can beat the natural blend of E&E!!

  13. i started to use optimum nutrition amino energy like 2 weeks ago, just one
    small scoop makes the trick

  14. C4 extreme… coffee w cream…. monster mean bean …. and in that order
I’m a caffeine addict who will probably have ulcers or stomach cancer in
    the near future

  15. C4 extreme… coffee w cream…. monster mean bean …. and in that order
I’m a caffeine addict who will probably have ulcers or stomach cancer in
    the near future

  16. Like the bodybuilding legend Leroy Colbert says “if you need a pre workout
to train the body ain’t ready.” That stuff is garbage and harmful. Shot of
    espresso maybe, but thats it.

  17. Coffee when real sleepy, green tea when feeling alright….
and I almost find that having 0 carbs pre workout but having like a
gatorade during workout really help me stay energetic

  18. The best thing i do for energy pre-workout is: having a small lunch and a
coffee before the workout, very important. by the way, which place are we?
    in Men’s Health….
