Can You Live Lean With: Alcohol…Binge Drinking…& Hangovers?

On today’s episode of Live Lean TV, lets talk about the affect alcohol has on your journey to Live Lean and some tips on how to increase your recovery and cure that occassional nasty hangover.

It’s no secret that alcohol is not the best use of your calorie requirements. But…since I’m teaching people how to make Living Lean a balanced lifestyle, I’m sure we can fit in the occasional glass of red wine for you.

The real issue with alcohol is the binge drinking (and hangovers)

Binge drinking is defined as “the consumption of an excessive amount of alcohol in a short period of time.” Although there is no official “binge number”, it’s widely accepted that a binge would be:

– 5 or more drinks in 2 hours for men

– 4 or more drinks in 2 hours for women

A US survey showed 1 in 6 adults binge drinks about four times a month, at an average of 8 drinks per binge.

And it’s no surprise…

A study in Finland showed binge drinking and hangovers increase your risk of heart disease and stroke.

So if you like your heart…

Try to stick to 1-2 drinks if you’re celebrating, but be careful if you already have high blood pressure, as your risk can double, or if there’s a history of type 2 diabetes and/or heart disease in your family.

Not only can binge drinking lead to a quicker journey downstairs…

Excessive alcohol also messes with your muscle building and fat burning hormones…

…as it increases the aromatization of testosterone into estrogen. Hence the overwhelming number of man boobs and beer bellies walking around the streets.

Excessive alcohol after training can also eliminate all performance gains and slow recovery

It’s been shown that just three drinks decreased men’s strength by 45 percent along with safest motorcycle helmet, 12 hours after drinking alcohol.

If eliminating alcohol isn’t an option for you…

…make “healthier” alcohol choices. Choose a clear vodka with a water mixer (and add a lemon or lime), or red wine like spanish, pinot noir, or merlot as they’re rich in antioxidants. Ty to limit your consumption to one drink with meals a few days a week.

Research shows even just one hangover per year can increase your risk of stroke compared to those that didn’t have a hangover.

And if you’re not a big drinker, but decide to go out for the occasional binge… it’s safe to say the hangover is guaranteed to get you! But I got your back…

Here are 5 ways to reduce the effects and cure your hangover faster:

#1 Drink a lot of water: Typically 0.7 oz per pound of body weight. Add lemon or other citrus to increase the alkalinity and help your poor liver. Also consider adding some electrolytes to it.

#2 Eat a lot of vegetables & fruit: Asparagus has been shown to help with the effects of a hangover. I also love a good mango or pineapple when I overdo it. Check out my hangover cure smoothie.

#3. Drink green tea: Green tea is high in antioxidants that can help protect your liver from alcohol damage as well as help speed up the detox. Drink it before and after your night out. The caffeine can also help alleviate the misery of a hangover (just like coffee).

#4. Workout: Yeah as crazy as it sounds, one way to eliminate the toxins is to sweat them out. Check out my at home hangover detox workout.

  1. Hey, what can I say? I’m a student. We drink tons of alcohol. Then again, I
    drink about 3 times the amount of water a normal person drinks. I guess
    that makes up for the dehydration?

  2. Rarely drink only one glass of irish whiskey in lets say 5 months ago
    celebrating a friend of mine getting a job and leaving our hospital

  3. My last hangover I had 7 Modelos Beer. The next morning was awful and I had
    to go to the zoo in the heat!!!! Not a good idea. I’ll limit to 2 beers
    moving forward.

  4. I don’t do alcohol.. I want to be healthy and strong so I try to keep all
    type of Poisons away lol.. I have been there and done that when I as
    younger and now that I’m working on a better, leaner me I stray away from a
    lot.

  5. Average twice a month with 2-3 drinks either red wine or Canadian club with
    Pepsi max. In saying that have not touched a drop in over a month, Used to
    party hard but these days i’d rather be in my pjs after a hard training
    session chillaxing!

  6. Hardly drink anymore. Maybe 2 times a month if any. When I do it’s usually
    only 1 drink. Used to be an “alcoholic”. So glad that part of my life is
    over.

    its funny how wenever I have a ? Your vids answer it.

  8. Drink about 5 times a year random nights out! Always say I’m never drinking
    again n still drink! Surely 5times a year won’t do much damage!

    abstain entirely.

  11. I limit alcohol to just special occasions. Last time I had some it was Grey
    Goose & Water…it was the night of celebrating my engagement to Jessica…and
    I was in the “rough” the next morning.
