What Is The Healthiest Alcohol To Drink On A Diet?

Can you drink alcohol and still be healthy?

On today’s episode of Live Lean TV, I’m answering the question, what is the healthiest alcohol to drink on a diet?

Alcohol on Food Wars, am I serious?

Yes, we’re comparing two different types of alcohol, head to head, to find out which one is healthier.

Welcome to the Live Lean TV Pub.

What can I get you to drink?

Here’s why.

As you know, Live Lean TV is all about living a sustainable healthy lifestyle.

This means the topics we cover are meant to be implemented 365 days a year.

99% of you will probably will have a drink of alcohol at some point in your life.

Maybe there’s a small percentage of you that do not drink alcohol, and if that is you, I’m not encouraging you to drink alcohol.

But for those other 99% of people, if I told you in order to Live Lean, you could never have alcohol again, what would you do?

You’d probably quit before even starting.

That’s not what I want, and it’s definitely not what you need to do.

I’m here to tell you, Living Lean is all about balance.

Everything, legally, in moderation.

Do I drink alcohol?

I admit, I enjoy a drink of alcohol every once in a while

But I limit my consumption, unless it’s for a celebration.

In other words, I don’t just say, oh it’s Friday night, so it’s time to drink a bunch of beers and get drunk.

I used to live that lifestyle back in my 20’s, but I don’t roll that way anymore, since it’s just not an important part of my life.

But, if it’s my birthday, a buddy’s bachelor party, or a wedding, then yes I will enjoy more alcohol, while aiming to not overdo it.

Although I do still have times where things get a little crazy and I’m hungover the next morning.

Just keeping it real.

The big question is, from a calorie perspective, is all alcohol created equal?

Well number one.

Alcohol contains approximately 7 calories per gram.

So regardless of what you’re drinking, the calories in the alcohol are the same.

However, just like every other food that I analyze on Food Wars, it’s about the ingredients that make up the alcoholic drink.

To demonstrate this, lets compare two different categories of alcohol drinks.

Battle of the alcohol: vodka vs coolers vs beer vs wine

We’ll then decide which category is the right type of alcohol to drink, so you can minimize the negative affect on your body and health.

Category A:

In category A, I have a pre-mixed alcoholic beverage that is often called a cooler.

Also included in category A is beer, or any other pre-mixed alcoholic drink that contains multiple ingredients.

Category B:

In category B, I have hard alcohol or clear liquor.

Hard alcohol includes:

  • vodka
  • tequila
  • gin
  • whiskey
  • rum

The example I used was Grey Goose, which is a brand of vodka.

If you didn’t already know, Grey Goose is my vodka brand of choice.

Why is vodka my alcoholic drink of choice?

#1. Vodka does not contain sugar

A serving of hard alcohol like vodka, tequila, gin, whiskey, and rum does not contain sugar.

#2. Vodka mixes well with just water

Most higher quality brands of vodka, such as Grey Goose, still tastes good even if you just mix it with water.

You can also add in some lemon or lime for extra flavor without a lot of added sugar.

In other words, you do not need to mix sugary soda or sugary fruit juices to make vodka taste good.

When you add soda or fruit drinks as a mixer, you are not only drinking the calories from the alcohol, you’re also adding a lot of extra sugar and calories from mixers.

This doesn’t make your body happy.

Also, since drinking a lot of alcohol can deplete you and dehydrate your body, using water as your mix can help rehydrate you.

Although using water as your mix will not completely keep you hydrated, it’s still going to be much better for you than a sugary soda or fruit drink mix.

Let me wrap this up

If you don’t drink alcohol, I’m not telling you to go drink alcohol.

You’re doing awesome in life without it, so keep it up.

But if you do drink alcohol, try to limit it to special occasions, and try not to drink pre-mixed fruity cooler drinks.

cooler drinks

Many of these pre-mixed alcoholic drinks are loaded with sugar, artificial sweeteners, and other unnatural ingredients that you can’t even pronounce.

What about beer?

beer

Having the occasional beer during the game is fine, but I do not recommend drinking multiple beers every day.

Think about it, it’s called a beer belly for a reason.

This is because contains hops, gluten, and sugar.

When over consumed, all of this quickly adds to more belly fat.

So try limiting your consumption of beer.

What about wine?

red wine

Wine can also be a healthier alcohol choice for you, especially when compared to these pre-mixed cooler drinks and beer.

I did a full episode on wine here.

Bottom line: what is the healthiest alcohol to drink on a diet?

The healthiest alcohol to drink on a diet is clear liquors that do not contain added sugar.

My personal favorites are vodka and tequila.

Mix these liquors with water and a fresh squeeze or lemon, lime, or even a carbonated water, like soda water, if you like carbonation.

So there you have it.

If you can take one thing away from this post, it is this.

Everything, legal, in moderation. Living Lean is not about not having fun.

In the case of drinking alcohol, it’s about making better choices with the options available.

Who would have thought on an episode of Food Wars, that we’d be talking about the healthiest alcohol to drink.

But once again, we’re all about living a sustainable lifestyle, that provides you with a healthy balance in your life.

  2. I’m a dark rum (Leviathan) and caffiene free diet coke drinker. Do you think dark rum (reminds me of molassas when chilled) is sugarier than the light brown rums?
