Almond Butter vs. Peanut Butter: Which Is Healthier?

Food Wars Segment #1: Almond Butter vs. Peanut Butter

In this episode of Live Lean TV Food Wars, we compare almond butter vs. peanut butter, which is healthier?

If you’re new to our Food Wars series, this is the show where we compare two foods, and we battle them out to see which one should be in your kitchen, and which one should be in your garbage.

As you know, my transformation 1,000,000 mission is to help transform the health of 1,000,000 people, by getting them to eat higher quality food, and getting them to move their bodies more efficiently.

The Food Wars series is all about teaching people to eat higher quality food.

Today we have a battle between natural almond butter vs. peanut butter (the conventional kind).

Who’s going to win?

You may be surprised at what you’re about to discover!

Competitor #1: Kraft Smooth Peanut Butter

First up is Kraft Smooth Peanut Butter with the “Sensible Solution” logo.

So must be good right?

Competitor #2: Maranatha Natural Raw Almond Butter

Let me ask first, which one of these is currently in your kitchen?

Time to compare by reading the nutrition information, including the calories and macronutrient breakdown, and the ingredients list.

Lets see if you made the right choice.

Almond Butter vs. Peanut Butter: Which Is Healthier?

Almond Butter vs. Peanut Butter: Macronutrients

Serving Size:

  • Almond Butter: 1 tbsp
  • Peanut Butter: 1 tbsp

Calories:

  • Almond Butter: 100 calories
  • Peanut Butter: 90 calories

Fat:

  • Almond Butter: 8 grams of fat
  • Peanut Butter: 8 grams of fat

Carbohydrates:

  • Almond Butter: 3 grams of carbohydrates (1 gram of sugar)
  • Peanut Butter: 4 grams of carbohydrates (1 gram of sugar)

Protein:

  • Almond Butter: 3 grams of protein
  • Peanut Butter: 3 grams of protein

Overall, pretty similar macronutrients, although for some reason it shows almond butter is 10 calories more, even though all the macronutrient amounts are the same, except peanut butter has one more gram of carbohydrate.

So not sure how the calories were calculated on that.

But guess what, as a Live Leaner, we do not just focus on calories

We also focus on what the ingredients are that make up the food.

Focus on putting natural ingredients in your body, not chemicals.

So with that said, lets look at the ingredients.

Almond Butter vs. Peanut Butter: Ingredients

This is where things get interesting.

Kraft Smooth Peanut Butter Ingredients:

  1. Select roasted peanuts (since it’s peanut butter, it should have peanuts in it)
  2. Soybean oil (you know how I feel about soybean oil)
  3. Corn dextrin (what the heck is corn dextrin?)
  4. Sugar
  5. Hydrogenated vegetable oil
  6. Salt

So in this Kraft smooth peanut butter, there are 6 ingredients.

Now lets compare this peanut butter vs. almond butter.

Maranatha Natural Raw Almond Butter Ingredients:

  1. Raw almonds

That was a simple one.

As I always say, look at the ingredients list.

If it reads more like a science experiment than natural food, you should realize your body’s digestive system is not made to process that “food”.

So when it comes to any type of nut butter or peanut butter, the key is finding a brand that contains just one ingredient.

It should be the nut or peanut.

Even if the label says “raw” or “natural” always make sure you read the ingredients list.

Added salt is ok, but I do prefer when the ingredients list contains just the nut.

Typically the less amount of ingredients in your pre-packaged foods, the better.

This means the food is closer to it’s natural state, which nature intended it to be.

This Kraft Smooth Peanut Butter is made up of chemicals and man made fats.

The Maranatha Raw Almond Butter just contains almonds, because it’s almond butter!

The Food Wars winner is:

The winner of this almond butter vs. peanut butter edition of food wars was easy.

The almond butter is going back in your cabinet and the peanut butter is going in the garbage.

In the nut butter and peanut butter food category, there are major nutrition differences between brands.

While some forms of nut butters provide healthy fats and protein, other brands may be full of unnatural, man made hydrogenated fats and processed sugar.

This was segment #1 in our new Food Wars series.

Hopefully you enjoyed it as we’ll be back again comparing new foods.

The Transformation 1,000,000 mission is in full effect.
