You’ll never believe it, but I’m proposing to my girlfriend who I met on YouTube.
Yes, on July 24th at 3:58pm ET, I was down on one knee asking my dream girl, Jessica Rumbaugh, the most important 6 word question a man can ask a girl.
“Will you Live Lean with me?”
I think you know where this is going.
But before I share the story of how I man’d up and asked Jessica to marry me, I want to first share the crazy story of how we met each other.
If you’re a new to the Live Lean Nation, you may not know who Jessica is, or maybe you’re wondering why I’m so open with my personal life.
First of all, Jessica is an angel that magically came into my life during my lowest of lows.
2012 was the most difficult year of my life.
But now, thanks to a random email, Jessica made the rest of my days incredible!
Secondly, I share our story because “Living Lean” is not just about rocking abs 365 days a year.
It’s about living your best, most confident life, in all areas of your life.
I wouldn’t be where I am today without taking risks or getting out of my comfort zone, as you’ll see.
I hope our love story inspires you to do the same.
It all started on New Years Eve, December 31, 2012.
At the time, I was living in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada.
If you’re not very familiar with Canadian geography, Halifax, Nova Scotia is located on the east coast of Canada.
At 3:27pm AST (11:27am PT), I received a random email from a Live Lean TV YouTube subscriber in San Diego, California, named Jessica Rumbaugh.
Before she sent the email to me, here is what Jessica told me was going through her mind:
I can’t believe it’s New Years Eve. Moving to New York City and focusing on my professional online fitness career is my #1 priority! I’m going to take action right now and email that fitness guy from YouTube, Brad Gouthro. He seems really cool. He will probably never respond, but it’s worth a try, I guess.
Before I received Jessica’s email, here is what was going through my mind:
I can’t believe it’s New Years Eve. I need to continue growing my business and get my personal life back on track this year.
Then I received the following email.
Just wanted to drop a note letting you know how much I enjoy your blogs and posts from a fellow fitness blogger on the same mission. Looking forward to more of your videos in the new year, would absolutely love to collaborate with you on something in the future as well in case you are searching for a female fitness co-host on a blog or two. I’m just barely starting on building up my online biz but it’s thanks to people like you who are so passionate and successful at sharing fitness tips publicly that I am inspired to keep going.
My resolution for the new year is to dedicate more time and more focus to spreading fitness inspiration and helping to transform more lives. Thanks for being a part of my inspiration.
Around 4:15pm AST (12:15pm PT) I remember reading the email.
My first impression was:
Hmmm… interesting email from a fitness girl named Jessica Rumbaugh. Let’s check her website to see what she’s all about. She’s great on camera. I like that she’s smart and owns her own website…and she’s beautiful. I’m going to write her back!
So I immediately wrote her the following email back.
Hey Jessica, thanks for the note and happy holidays to you too! You stand out already because you took action and asked for what you wanted. That’s an incredible characteristic of successful people!
I love collaborating with other passionate people and am always looking for new ideas.
I just saw some of your videos and you’re great on camera.
Send me any concepts you may have and we can talk further about it.
After numerous flight delays, I arrived in Los Angeles 20 hours later, with Jessica waiting at the LAX airport for me.
She was holding an iPad with my name written in lights.
This meant a lot to me because, prior to this, I mentioned one of the items on my bucket list was to see my name in lights.
Therefore, I scratched 2 things off my bucket list that day:
That night we went out to eat and both ordered beer and salad.
Right then I knew she was special.
The next morning we filmed our 4 minute male vs female workout rep challenge on Santa Monica beach.
Jessica was supposed to leave after filming but she ended up staying with me for the rest of my trip!
What followed after that was lots of traveling back and forth between New York City and Halifax.
In December 2013, I decided to move from Halifax to Toronto, which made the traveling to New York City much easier.
Then on July 24th, 2014, it was my turn to make this day the most incredible day yet.
Prior to the big day, it had been an incredible week.
My parents, from Halifax, NS, and my brother Ian, living in Bermuda, flew in to Toronto to celebrate.
Once Jessica and I had some alone time, I told her that I made a video of how we first me.
She said she couldn’t wait to watch it, but first needed to go to the bathroom.
While she was in there, oh man, my heart was pumping, because as she watches the video, I was going to get down on one knee.
By the way, I forget to mention that she had no idea I was recording this the whole time.
Then when the time came, I was so emotional and nervous, that I was shaking, and couldn’t talk.
Then I finally “man’d up” and said…
“Jessica Rumbaugh, would you do me the absolute pleasure of and marry me?”
Yes, it just happened.
Here was Jessica’s response:
“Of course boo.”
In other words, she said yes!
By the way, we did get married.
Shout out to YouTube for helping us find each other.
Thanks so much for sharing this day with me and Jessica.
Tonight, we have amazing seats to see Bruno Mars live in concert.
Thanks to my brother for the hook up on the tickets!
Also, thanks again to you for all of your positive energy and vibes.
It’s an honor to have you a part of the Live Lean Nation.
Keep being awesome.
We love you guys.
Brad and Jess
