Who Is Steve Cook?

But first, if you are one of the few people that doesn’t know who Steve Cook is, in 2020 he became a trainer on the TV show, The Biggest Loser.

However, the following interview took place in 2014, before he was a trainer on The Biggest Loser.

Back in 2014, you probably saw shirtless images of Steve featured on the cover of Muscle & Fitness, BodyBuilding.com and Optimum Nutrition.

Steve is also an IFBB Pro.

Get excited for this exclusive Q&A interview with Steve Cook.

Question #1: Steve, What Is Your #1 Fitness Tip To Live Lean?

Steve Cook: When it comes to working out, I would definitely say don’t be afraid to lift heavy.

The more muscle you have, the more calories you will be burning at a stand still.

A lot of times people forget that in order to put on muscle, you need to lift heavier.

A stronger muscle is going to be a bigger muscle down the line.

So hypertrophy training is always great.

Don’t be afraid to drop down the reps.

The same workout tip applies to women.

You’re not going to get big and bulky.

Brad Gouthro: I’m glad you say that since 50% of my Live Lean TV YouTube subscribers are females.

I’m always telling women to lift weights, so if that workout tip is also coming from the man, Steve Cook, ladies you should listen up as well.

Steve Cook: Lift weights.

You’re going to see the best female physiques out there doing resistance training.

It’s just a must.

Brad Gouthro: Absolutely.

Question #2: Steve, What Is Your #1 Nutrition Tip To Live Lean?

Steve Cook: my number one nutrition tip is you have to prepare your meals.

Preparation is key.

If you don’t prepare, be prepared to fail.

I mean, that goes without saying.

Obviously, if it’s everywhere, there’s something to it.

I’ve been there too.

When you have a busy life and you’re hungry, it’s just so easy to stop and pickup something fast, if you don’t have your meals packed and ready.

After a long day, the last thing you’re going to want to do, in that moment, is make something healthy.

However, if you have healthy food already prepared and ready to eat, it’s just super easy.

Brad Gouthro: You travel quite a bit, right?

Steve Cook: I travel a ton.

Brad Gouthro: So if Steve can do it while traveling, most people should be able to find the time too.

Steve Cook: It’s a little bit tougher when you travel.

When I travel, I tend to eat a lot of protein bars, but you have to always look at the macronutrients on the bars.

There are some protein bars out there that are a pretty good meal replacement, if they don’t have a ton of sugar.

Brad Gouthro: That’s a good segue into my third question.

Question #3: Steve, What Is Your #1 Supplement Tip To Live Lean?

Steve Cook: When it comes to supplements, I always tell people that I don’t really consider protein powder to be a supplement.

Protein powder is there to make sure you’re hitting your daily protein requirements.

It’s a very easy and digestible way to make sure you are getting enough protein.

Protein is important for muscle recovery, muscle repair, and muscle growth.

As I said earlier, the more muscle you have, the more calories you will be burning.

Taking a good multivitamin will help make sure you’re overall healthy.

For supplements more specific to Living Lean, I would say CLA and L-carnitine.

I really wouldn’t mess around too much with a fat burner.

When I’m doing a contest for a Men’s Physique fitness competition, a fat burner supplement might be the last thing I implement, as long as everything else is in place.

Brad Gouthro: What about fish oil?

Steve Cook: Fish oil is good fat source and definitely a staple.

I never stop taking fish oil.

My supplement recommendations of CLA and L-carnitine is what I add in when I have a specific fat loss goal.

I take fish oil all the time.

Brad Gouthro: Absolutely.

The information that Steve is sharing is probably sounding very familiar, as this is what I talk about every week.

So it’s good reassurance that Steve’s doing the exact same things.

Question #4: Steve, What Is Your #1 Motivation Tip To Live Lean?

Brad Gouthro: In other words, how do you keep Living Lean, 365?

Steve Cook: Well I always tell people you are what you think about.

If you are at work, it’s been a long day, and you haven’t had time to think about the gym, here’s what I recommend.

Turn on a podcast, or if you have time, go on the internet and read something that’s going to put you in the right mindset.

I like to watch YouTube videos or read something from the latest fitness magazines or Bodybuilding.com.

I love reading about the muscle I’m going to train that day.

I’ve trained chest a million times.

I honestly have done more chest workouts in my lifetime than I can count.

How Do I Still Motivate Myself To Do It?

There are always new ways to train by changing up the tempo or trying new exercises.

There are so many different things you can do that mentally stimulate you.

That new stimulation can help turn around your workouts, so you can get more out of them physically, over the long-term.

Brad Gouthro: Since we’re talking about motivation, this is a good time to plug your YouTube channel.

Steve Cook: There you go, my YouTube channel is called Swoldier Nation.

Brad Gouthro: What is Swoldier Nation?

Steve Cook: Swoldier Nation is a community.

I had a buddy in college call me a swoldier because I was always in the gym.

I went through a divorce when I was younger, so I went back to the gym and did things the right way.

No shortcuts and no steroids.

In life, there are no shortcuts or taking the easy way out.

Our generation is full of quick fixes and immediate gratification and satisfaction.

That’s not what life is about.

So Swoldier Nation is about doing things the right way and putting in the time, as a community.

Brad Gouthro: How similar does that sound to the Live Lean Nation?

I mean the Live Lean Nation and the Swoldier Nation is doing it 365 days a year.

This is all good stuff, so hopefully you guys are learning a lot.

Here’s my last question Steve.

Question #5: Steve, What Is Your #1 Relationship Tip?

Brad Gouthro: This is a little bit off topic for fitness, but relationship wise, I have a girlfriend who lives in New York City, so we’re working through things long distance.

Steve Cook: I’ll tell you that I’ve definitely done the long distance thing too since I travel so much for my job.

Honestly, it’s all about communication and expectations.

You have to be on the same page.

I know we’ve all heard communication is important, but when you really think about it, it really means you have to be honest with yourself about what you want out of the relationship.

You also have to be honest about where it’s going, and be realistic with your partner.

Just make sure that you are up front and transparent about your beliefs, and everything else that is important to you.

If it’s going to workout in the end, it’s going to work out.

But if it doesn’t, you know you don’t need to hide things.

When it comes to your parter, synergy is something I like to talk about.

Since you care about that person, if you guys don’t agree on something, there’s always a better solution than to just compromise.

At the end of the day, it’s about being a team and a unit.

Brad Gouthro: Absolutely.

I actually just had a similar conversation about communication this morning, and things are all good.

Love you Jess 😉.

Thank you Steve for taking the time to talk with me.

I appreciate you for coming on.

Steve Cook: Thank you.
