How Much Sugar Should You Eat In A Day?

On today’s episode of Live Lean TV, I’m sharing 8 tips to break your sugar addiction in 14 days, and how much sugar you can eat in a day.

What?

Sugar is ruining my life?

As a society, we are blasted with food options that are loaded with sugar.

Unfortunately, this over consumption of sugar could be ruining your life, in more ways than you expect.

How Much Sugar Should You Eat A Day?

The American Heart Association recommends you should limit sugar to:

  • Women: 20g of sugar a day
  • Men: 36g of sugar a day
  • Children: 12g of sugar a day

However, people are consuming way more sugar than this amount.

On average, people are consuming approximately 22 tsp or 88g of sugar a day.

9 Negative Health Risks Caused By Eating Too Much Sugar

I’ve done numerous videos on why over consuming sugar increases your fat storage.

Does Sugar Make You Fat?

However, do you also know about all the other negative health effects caused by eating too much sugar?

Eating too much sugar increases your risk of:

  1. Unhealthy weight gain
  2. Diabetes
  3. Heart disease
  4. High blood pressure
  5. High bad LDL cholesterol and low good HDL cholesterol
  6. Looking older via wrinkles and saggy skin
  7. Depression
  8. Laziness
  9. Becoming addicted to sugar, just like a drug

Yes, it’s true.

Sugar is addictive just like a drug.

Studies showed lab rats were more addicted to sugar, then they were addicted to cocaine.

So with all that said, kicking your sugar habit will not be easy.

But you can manage and limit your sugar consumption with these 8 tips to break your sugar addiction.

8 Tips To Break Your Sugar Addiction

If you can break your sugar addiction, and quit cold turkey, congratulations.

However, if you’re like most people, I recommend you take it step by step, with the following 8 tips.

Tip #1: Slowly Reduce Your Sugar Consumption Every Week

If you’re used to drinking 2 cans of soda a day, reduce it to 1.5 cans of soda next week.

Then go to 1 can the following week.

Eventually replace your soda with carbonated water, and add some lemon or lime to it for flavor.

Then, over time, transition to drinking more pure water.

Tip #2: Don’t Bring Sugar Into Your House

Rather than buying and bringing candy or a tub of ice cream into your home, go out for that ice cream cone for your cheat meal.

Don’t bring the sugar into your castle.

Tip #3: Always Read The Ingredients List

Always read the ingredients lists, and be aware of hidden sugars.

Hidden sugars are typically words ending in:

  • -ose
  • syrup

Tip #4: Start The Day Right With Eggs

Start the day right by replacing your sugary cereal, with hunger crushing eggs.

The protein and healthy fat in eggs will make you feel more energized and satisfied throughout the day.

Let’s move on to the next tip.

Tip #5: Look At The Amount Of Sugar On Nutrition Labels

You’ll be surprised to see how much sugar is in:

Just being aware of the amount of sugar in your foods and drinks, is the first step.

Tip #6: Replace Milk Chocolate With Dark Chocolate

If you have a chocolate craving, avoid the milk chocolate bars.

Milk chocolate bars are loaded with sugar.

What Kind Of Dark Chocolate Is Good For You?

Always go for a few squares of dark chocolate, with a 70% or more level of cacao.

If the label doesn’t say what % of cacao it is, put it back.

Tip #7: Enjoy Your Favorite Fruit For Dessert

For dessert, always choose nature’s dessert, fruit, over sugar filled desserts.

Or grab 2-3 squares of that dark chocolate.

Tip #8: When You Feel A Sugar Craving, Get Moving

Finally, if you feel a sugar craving coming on, change your state and environment, by going outside for 15 minute walk, in the fresh air.

Please, don’t just sit in front of the TV.

Doing that will just make your sugar craving worse.

  1. Fruit is great, berries are low in fructose.
Dried fruit is high in fructose sugars use sparingly. I kicked sugar years
ago when I found out I had a fructose intolerance. Best snacks are home
made protein balls with nuts, seeds and cacao.
Don’t juice fruit as it takes out the five and leaves only fructose. Best
juices to have are green, fuels the body and mind.
Dessert home made coconut, banana ice cream. Avoid sauces they are
extremely high in sugar. Tomato and BBQ.

  2. I quit sugar for lent… First few weeks was tough but I keep fresh fruit
    on hand so that helped

  3. Thanks for the tips Brad. Kicked it awhile ago. Now my treats are very
low or no sugar. I can’t handle anything too sweet anymore. It does feel
great to know that I don’t need or have cravings anymore. That is a side
effect I have is that I don’t really crave anything sweet anymore. Doesn’t
mean I don’t indulge here and there, but I am never dying for something.
Just keep at it people. The payoff is well worth it. Thanks for the vid.

  4. Wow we need a video for everything these days. Can I get a video on how to
get up every 30 minutes and and walk for 5 minutes.

  5. Fruit! If I’m feeling a sweet tooth, I’ll have half a cup of berries, a few
bricks of 85% dark chocolate and a table spoon of nut butter, it’s a
    delicious combo.

  6. Once you stop taking sugar .. you will never EVER want it again ..
Thanks Brad .. very good video as usual ..!! *Peace*
