Avoid These 3 Mistakes When Buying Greek Yogurt

On today’s episode of Live Lean TV, let’s talk Greek yogurt, in particular, is Greek yogurt healthy?

Unfortunately, if you’re like a lot of people, you’re probably eating the wrong kind of this “health” food.

It’s important to avoid these 3 mistakes when buying Greek yogurt.

So first off, I have to say that I don’t eat Greek yogurt anymore.

I stopped eating greek yogurt over 2 years ago, since my body just doesn’t handle dairy very well.

However, if you can digest dairy, I’m sure you’ve heard of, and probably tried, Greek yogurt.

It’s been super marketed as a healthy and high protein alternative to regular yogurt.

Is Greek Yogurt Healthy?

What if I told you not all brands of Greek yogurt are created the same?

Like most things in the food industry, food marketers will take something pure, and re-create it to suit the tastebuds of today’s sugar obsessed culture.

This means different brands of Greek yogurt will have different:

  • calorie amounts
  • protein amounts
  • sugar amounts
  • ingredients list
  • processing techniques

Avoid These 3 Mistakes When Buying Greek Yogurt

Next time you pick up a jug of Greek yogurt, pay attention to these 3 things.

#1. The Amount of Protein Per Serving

In most cases, Greek yogurt should contain twice as much protein per serving as conventional yogurt.

However, depending on the straining process the company uses, the amount of protein per serving will vary.

Always read the nutrition label when comparing brands of Greek yogurt.

I’ve seen some brands of Greek yogurt containing twice as much protein as other brands.

This is because some food marketers skip the straining process, and just add thickening agents and low quality whey protein concentrates, to increase the protein amount.

#2. Make Sure You’re Actually Buying Greek Yogurt

Greek yogurt is made by straining the liquid whey from the regular yogurt.

Is Yogurt Good For Weight Loss Or Is Yogurt Bad For You?

This straining process makes Greek yogurt more solid and also removes some of the sugar and increases the protein content.

The ingredients list on Greek yogurt should include:

However, be aware.

If the label says “Greek” it doesn’t necessarily mean it’s Greek yogurt.

Like I said earlier, some brands just add thickening agents and protein to the yogurt, to make it look like Greek yogurt.

The good thing is you’ll see these added ingredients on the ingredients list, so you’ll know better.

#3. Stick With Unflavored Greek Yogurt And Add Your Own Healthy Flavors

Unflavored Greek yogurt doesn’t taste sweet.

This is why companies are adding up to 25 grams of sugar via:

Instead of buying already sweetened versions of Greek yogurt, buy unflavored and add your own healthy natural sweeteners such as a little bit of:

Bonus Tip: Frozen Greek Yogurt Isn’t Greek Yogurt

Even though the calories may be similar, the overall macronutrient balance is not.

Frozen Greek yogurt is typically lower in protein and higher in sugar.

Not good.

Bottom Line: Is Greek Yogurt Healthy?

As with any food decision, it’s buyer beware.

The next time you’re at the grocery store, just make sure you avoid these 3 mistakes when buying Greek yogurt.

  1. I usually eat 0% Chobani plain after workout… hopefully this is the right
brand which is not making me FAT…

  2. I was eating Chobani but it started making me nauseous. Then I switched to
Dannon Oikos, but the sugar was too high and it made me dizzy. At this
point I’m realizing I can’t eat crap anymore and my body just wants REAL
simple foods. My taste buds, however, do not agree

  3. I love Greek Yoghurt, but like most foods all in moderation. I love Fage 0%
Greek Yoghurt, occasionally 2% Fage, both have amazing protein content. I
use on my treat day for protein pancakes, great on a curry to take some
heat out, if Ive been a little liberal on the chilli lol! Or even with some
blueberries or rhubard on a carb up day! But gotta work for it first lol!!

  4. Great tips man. I use PC Brand 0% plain greek. I add berries to it and it
is awesome. It has no crap in it. Thanks for the vid.

  5. Brad, awesome video.

I eat Fage 2% plain. It has low sugar high protein ratio and is
surprisingly sweeter than other plain yogurt. No need for added sugar or
    fruit!

  6. Hey Brad!
Colud you make a video on your opinion on walden farms products?

As for greek yougurt I lime the total 0%

Love all your videos. You are such an inspirational couple.

    Hugs from Spain.

  7. The biggest problem I find with Greek yogurt (or most yogurt in general) is
that the milk comes from cows treated with antibiotics and hormones. Fage
and Chobani both have GMOs which should be avoided at all costs. Order raw
yogurt or kefir from a local farm. The Weston A Price foundation website
has listings on where to find a farm close to you.

  8. I eat Fage 0%. I also just bought a Greek yogurt maker. I used organic 2%
milk, and some organic plain yogurt.

  9. Ok I’m probably an awful yogurt picker outer. But to be fair I HATE yogurt
and just happened to find a brand with a couple of flavor since like.
Dannon light n fit strawberry cheesecake and banana cream!

  10. Great tips bro 100% true another good alternative is KEFIR I think it has
less lactose so it’s good for lactose intolerance
