Are Higher Animal Welfare Products Healthier?

On today’s episode of Live Lean TV, we’re discussing the nutritional benefits of buying higher welfare meat.

Today’s viewer question is from #AskLiveLeanTV Ep. 020.

Here’s today’s viewer question:

Hulllksmash from Snapchat says:

I try to eat as much higher welfare meat as I can, such as free range and organic, as I believe if something is going to die for me to eat, it should be treated with respect and care. What is your outlook on animal welfare, and are there benefits of higher welfare versus lower welfare meat sources?

Nutritional Benefits Of Buying Higher Welfare Meat

Jess: When it comes to benefits, yes we definitely agree with you.

Brad: Grass fed cattle are roaming around, meaning they are not stuck in a little box, where they can not move.

Grass Fed Beef Benefits

This is more humane since the animals are actually outside feeding, getting fresh air, and seeing sunlight.

This is the same with free range chickens, who are out running around, and doing their thing.

From a health perspective, if the foods you are eating, are not being fed a diet that nature intended them to eat, that’s being passed on to you.

Here’s what I mean by this.

When farmers feed the animals grains, soy, and corn, it fattens them up quickly.

In some situations, they’re also pumping the animals full of hormones.

When you eat these animals, these hormones may get passed on to you.

When possible, we do our best to eat grass fed, free range, and organic.

We invest in higher welfare meat because we want make sure the animals we’re eating are being treated well.

There is also a nutritional health benefit to eating higher welfare meat.

Higher welfare grass fed beef provides better sources of healthy fats, including CLA and omega-3s.

Due to their unnatural diet, conventional grain fed beef do not provide the same high quality healthy fats.

Jess: I do think there is a difference in flavor too.

Brad: Good point.

Have you ever had homegrown tomatoes versus store bought tomatoes?

It’s like night and day.

I feel it’s the same thing with meat and eggs.

You can actually taste a difference between organic grass fed steak and conventional grain fed steak.

Brad: It’s the same thing eggs, especially the egg shell strength.

You could blow on the shell of a conventional egg to make it crack and shatter.

To crack the shell of an organic egg, you really have to beat on it.

Think about those things the next time you’re debating if buying higher welfare meat is worth the money.

In my opinion, it’s important to find the money and put it towards your food, as opposed to buying a Ferrari 😂.
