What Is The Juice Cleanse Diet? Is Juicing Right For You?

On today’s episode of Live Lean TV, I’m answering the following question: is the juice cleanse diet good for weight loss?

If you’re not familiar with juicing or the juice cleanse diet, it was a big topic back in 2013.

Let’s find out if juicing can actually help you lose weight.

The juice cleanse diet gained a lot of popularity after Joe Cross’s “Fat Sick and Nearly Dead” documentary.

Joe was 100 lbs overweight and on a bunch of medication for his autoimmune disease.

He decided to try juicing for 60 days, in hopes of allowing the body to naturally heal itself.

The rest is history.

Joe lost the 100 lbs and got off of his medication.

So juicing worked for Joe, but will juicing work for you?

Let’s first take a closer look at what juicing actually does.

What Is Juicing?

Juicing is a great way to add more vegetables to your diet.

Let’s be real, while we all need the health benefits from vegetables, we also know we should be eating more.

How Do I Break The Habit Of Eating Carbohydrates?

When juicing, the juicer separates the juice from the pulp.

But remember, the pulp is where the majority of the fiber is found.

This is why there is a lot of debate on whether it’s healthier to just eat the vegetable whole, rather than juicing it.

juicing vs blending vs greens powder

Some experts say you absorb more nutrients via juicing, while other people say it’s not worth it since you lose the fiber.

Fiber is essential for digestive health.

Based on this, I honestly prefer eating food whole.

Juicing Can Help The Body Naturally Heal Itself

I’ve said it time and time again, the body is an amazing machine, if you treat it right.

When juicing, the body quickly absorbs nutrients and antioxidants into the bloodstream.

It’s kind of like a natural caffeine high.

Juicing has also been shown to help cholesterol issues, lower blood pressure, and in Joe’s case, autoimmune diseases.

Juicing is also a great way to add more variety in your diet, since most of the time, you don’t even taste the foods you’re juicing.

So if you don’t like spinach, or any other vegetable you know you should be eating, try juicing it.

Juicing Tip: Drink It Right Away

Be sure to drink as much of the juice as you can immediately after juicing it.

When you leave the juice out, it has been shown to harbor bacteria, and the exposure to air may also reduce the juice’s nutritional power.

How To Do The Juice Cleanse Diet

Most juice cleanse diets start off with a 3 day juice cleanse.

Joe Cross’ juice cleanse diet includes a 2 day “ramp up” protocol to begin flushing your body before the 3 day juice cleanse diet begins.

During the actual 3 day juice cleanse diet, your meals will be comprised of 5 juices a day, as shown in the infographic above.

These 5 juices are then followed by an evening meal comprised of only fruit and vegetables.

After 3 day juice cleanse diet is over, you’ll follow a “ramp down” protocol by having 3 meals a day, focused on whole foods, and at least 1 juice.

I’ve included a link to Joe Cross’ exact Juice Cleanse Diet plan here.

So that’s how you do the juice cleanse diet.

Now here’s the big question.

Is The 3 Day Juice Cleanse Diet Right For You?

Like most fitness and nutrition questions I get asked, my two word answer is, it depends.

For me personally, I’d say no to the extremes of the 3 day juice cleanse diet.

Why?

95% of my meals are already filled with whole natural foods, lots of vegetables, lots of water, and a daily green juice supplement.

7 Foods PACKED With Antioxidants

Here’s a link to the greens powder drink supplement that I use every day.

I prefer to follow this balanced approach to nutrition rather than 3 days straight of juicing.

In other words, when you consistently do the right things, you don’t need to take extreme measures like the juice cleanse diet.

Living Lean Is All About Consistency

Even though we all have our off days, if you get back on track the next day, you’re well on your way to Living Lean.

But if you’re still stuffing your face with processed crap, day after day, give the 3 day juice cleanse diet a try for yourself, and see how you feel.

If 3 days of juices sounds too extreme, then I have 3 words for you.

  1. I would like to include juicing as part of my daily (Paleo) diet. How
should I account for the calories in my overall macro proportions?
Depending upon how much fruit is in your juice, it would be easy to rack up
some hidden sugar quickly. That said, I intend to do mostly green/veggie
    juices.

  2. Brad, a few comments about the video. I do agree with your point of view,
as the matter of fact, that it why I subscribed to your channel, I consider
you to be one of the few guys who actually understand how it all works
    together.

If you do not want to loose the fiber in most juices, try blending them or
in some cases look for some benefiber and add it to the juice (con: a tad
more expensive than just the veg.)

As you said, its all about being healthy during time and not only during
the diet period. The Paradigm Shift (now I can’t forget that). Adding some
whey protein can help during this juicing if your going for several days.
    Protein is VERY important.

Try remembering people the importance of not only eating more vegetables
but a larger variety of them (remember to eat the rainbow)

Cut the carbs in daily basis ( not easy at all but start cutting them by
half for a couple of weeks, then again in half and so on till you don’t get
that urge or craving for them)

Juices can also be prepared and then stored in the freezer in small plastic
bags. Sometimes its easier to prepare a few at the time than only one by
one. Freezing will stop bacteria from reproducing and the low temperature
and bag will stop the antioxidants from reacting with the air itself.

Keep up the good work Brad, I wish you success reaching the 50,000 goal, I
will see what I can do to help out.

  3. I’m 16 and After watching the movie i decided to try juicing ( to get a
change from my vegatarian diet) and the second day I threw up my breakfeast
juice and felt like I was sick out of my mind so I stopped juicing. I hope
to someday be man enough to juice we 7 days tho.

  4. I need some help; I’m 6’2-6’3 and I weigh 172lbs currently. My body
structure isn’t wide, I have a 34 in waist I believe; however, I am still
fat. I am aware 172lbs is underweight. I’ve been cutting, I used to be
182lbs and cut down to 172. But I realized that losing 10 lbs didn’t meet
my goal. I still feel uncomfortable with my shirt off. So at this point I
don’t know whether to “lean bulk” or cut, because if I cut I’ll eventually
get to like 165… and if I bulk I might become fat? I have a lot of fat in
my chest and belly. Anyone’s comments and help would be greatly
    appreciated.
