Follow These 4 Rules To Find The Best Healthy Dark Chocolate

On today’s episode of Live Lean TV, I’m sharing 4 rules to follow when deciding what kind of dark chocolate is good for you.

Yes, I’m going to answer a question that probably none of you care about.

Is eating dark chocolate healthy for you?

Ok, so maybe a few of you may care about it.

If you’re a chocolate lover, I’m sure you have been waiting for this video post.

So, is it okay to eat chocolate?

You may be surprised by my answer.

Eating chocolate used to be a guilty pleasure for so many of us.

However, recent research is telling us that certain types of chocolate are rich in flavonoids.

What Are The Health Benefits Of Flavonoids?

Flavonoids are an antioxidant that have many health benefits including:

  • protecting your arteries
  • lowering the risk of prostate cancer
  • reducing inflammation

Plus, flavonoids found in dark chocolate can help increase those happy sensations that make you feel awesome.

These same flavonoids are also found in berries.

So if you’re that dude, or dudette, who is one out of a million people that doesn’t like chocolate, eat your berries.

Does this mean you can go out and chow down on as many Snickers or KiT Kat chocolate bars that you want?

Um, no.

Of course there are healthy and unhealthy types of chocolate.

4 Rules To Find The Best Type Of Chocolate

4 Rules To Eat Chocolate IG

Here are the 4 rules to find the best kind of chocolate.

Rule #1: The Darker The Better

When it comes to dark chocolate, the darker the better.

Look for brands of dark chocolate that contain at least 70% cocoa.

The higher the cocoa percentage, the more bitter it will taste, so find your happy balance.

Rule #2: Read The Ingredients Label

Just like any packaged food, always read the ingredients label.

High fructose corn syrup and hydrogenated fats are two ingredients that can ruin the health benefits of dark chocolate.

So if it contains high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) or hydrogenated fats, throw it on the ground, and step on it.

Or you could just put it back in the shelve.

Rule #3: Avoid Milk Chocolate Products

Look at the ingredients label to see if the dark chocolate contains milk.

Studies reveal that milk may block the absorption of the antioxidants in the dark chocolate.

So don’t wash your dark chocolate down with dairy milk either smart guy.

All right let’s move on.

Rule #4: Limit The Serving Size

Just because dark chocolate can be healthy for you, it doesn’t give you free rein to chow down on the entire dark chocolate bar.

15-30 grams of dark chocolate is all you need per day.

But for my beautiful Live Lean ladies that are, how do I say this, enjoying the midlife… *ahem* menopause.

You can enjoy up to 4 servings of dark chocolate per day, if you’re exercising 4 times per week.

But remember, one serving of dark chocolate equals 15 grams.

So 4 servings of dark chocolate, throughout the day, would equal 60 grams.

  1. My god, this guy has great personality. I have no interest in chocolate,
but this was so damned entertaining I watched the whole thing. I would love
to hear more about Intermittent fasting though.

  2. I needed that information, my sister was driving me crazy by eating a bar of black chocolate every day and complaining about her diet that it doesn’t work :-S

  3. I’m so happy to know I did a good job picking out my own chocolate bar before watching this 🙂 endangered species dark chocolate bar… I get them from publix and winn dixie. Its soooo good!

  4. 1. can you give advise on Flax seed podwer, chia seeds added to protien podwer a pos or neg time of day etc.
2.alternatives to sweet potatoes (gassy) Please

    Thank you sir!

  5. Well, it turns out my favorite chocolate won’t make the cut – not because of the no-no ingredients, but because it’s about 50% cocoa. I guess I’ll have to make my own dark, salted chocolate.

  6. Cuando me ven ponerle cacao a algunas recetas me miran raro porque dicen
que el chocolate es malo… not so quick!
El chocolate, si se mira qué se come no solo no es malo si no que es
    bastante saludable.

    Echad un ojo!

  7. One of my favorite recipes is a cacao nibs sprinkled homemade ice cream. Almond milk blended with whey protein and macadamia butter, pour it over a bowl of frozen berries…top with shredded coconut and cacao nibs…DAMN THAT’S GOOD
