On today’s episode of Live Lean TV, I’m sharing my FLYBIRD 55 LB Adjustable Dumbbells Review.
Are these the best dumbbells for home workouts?
Let’s find out.
Over the last 3 years, home workouts have become increasingly popular.
If you’re not training in the gym, having access to a good set of adjustable dumbbells at home is essential for:
Back in 2011, when I lived in Canada, I built a fitness training studio in my basement where I would train my one-on-one in person clients.
The second most expensive piece of equipment was buying a 10 pair set of 5-50 lbs hex dumbbells.
Not only were they expensive, they also took up a lot of space, since there were 10 sets of dumbbells.
Fast forward to today, I’m currently building out our new fitness studio in my new house in California.
Even though I already own a pair of Powerblock adjustable dumbbells, I’ve never been a big fan of the big bulky design or the mechanism to adjust the weights.
While researching for a new set of dumbbells, I saw these FLYBIRD 55 lb Adjustable Dumbbells, and they were kind enough to send me a set to do a product review.
Let’s dive into this review, and see if the FLYBIRD 55 lb Adjustable Dumbbells are worth your investment.
First, let’s talk about the features of these adjustable dumbbells.
The number one feature is of course the compact design of having access to 5 dumbbells in one.
The compact design of only having one set of dumbbells vs. 5-10 individual sets not only saves money, but also makes them easy to store and use in any home gym.
This means you won’t have to buy multiple sets of dumbbells, plus a dumbbell rack, thus making these adjustable dumbbells a better space-saving and cost-effective choice.
As mentioned, one of the main features I didn’t like about the PowerBlocks was the pin mechanism to change the weight.
I always found it was hard to line up the pin to get it in the correct section.
This wastes time and patience in between sets, especially if you are completing a superset where you need to adjust the weight fast.
Based on this frustration, the feature I love the most about the FLYBIRD 55 lb Adjustable Dumbbells is the unique dial system that easily allows you to quickly adjust the weights.
To switch weights, all you need to do is have the dumbbells inside the included storage tray, then twist the handles.
So quick, simple, and seamless.
One con with the FLYBIRD 55 lbs adjustable dumbbells is the weight increments.
The lightest weight increment you can increase by is 10 lbs.
Therefore the only adjustable weight selections goes from:
It’s not a huge deal, I’m probably nitpicking just to find cons, but I would have loved to see an option of increasing only by 5 lbs.
Therefore following a weight selection of:
I should also mention, if you don’t need 55 lbs weights, they also have a lighter adjustable dumbbell set that goes up to 25 lbs.
The weight increments for this 25 lbs adjustable dumbbell set are:
Next, let’s talk about the design of these dumbbells.
The FLYBIRD 55 lb Adjustable Dumbbells have a sleek and compact design, making them easy to store and use in any home gym.
Although I personally prefer the feel of steel in my hands, the handles do have a comfortable grip that won’t slip even during sweaty workouts, thus allowing you to perform your workouts without any discomfort.
Additionally, the weight plates are made of high-quality steel and have a durable coating, which ensures the dumbbells’ longevity.
Even though they are not as big and bulky as the Powerblocks, when using the 11 lbs dumbbells, they are bulkier than a traditional 10 lbs dumbbell set.
However, when compared to other adjustable dumbbells, they are designed very nicely.
One thing that is a little bit of a nuisance is the dumbbells need to be in the storage tray to adjust the weights.
Therefore, if you’re doing a quick dumbbell flat bench press drop set, you would need to move the storage trays to the floor beside the bench, in order to quickly change the weight.
Not a huge deal, but it would be nice to be able to adjust the weight, without having to have the storage tray.
Now, let’s talk about the performance of these dumbbells.
As mentioned, one of the best things about the FLYBIRD 55 lb Adjustable Dumbbells is how smooth and easy they are to adjust.
The dial system is straightforward to use and allows you to switch between weights quickly and easily.
The weight plates also lock in securely, so you don’t have to worry about any wobbling or clanking noises during your workout.
Lastly, if you are stronger, these adjustable dumbbells do max out at 55lbs.
Therefore, they may not be heavy enough for big compound movements such as:
Fortunately, I have a barbell for those movements in my home gym.
From my experience, these FLYBIRD 55 lb Adjustable Dumbbells are the best adjustable dumbbells that I’ve ever used.
This makes them an excellent investment for anyone looking to build muscle and burn fat at home.
