If you’re in your 30s or 40s and still training just to look good, you might be setting yourself up to feel weak, tired, and broken later in life.
Because getting lean is one thing but staying strong, energized, and capable for the next 30–40 years?
That’s a completely different game.
So in today’s episode of Live Lean TV, I’m going to show you exactly how to train so your body doesn’t fall apart as you age.
To be respectful of your time I’ve included jump to links to all the sections in the table of contents below.
First, let’s look at…
Most people aren’t out of shape because they don’t work hard.
They’re out of shape because they’re focused on the wrong goal.
They’re only chasing weight loss, instead of building and sustaining muscle.
If you think all you need to do is eat less and burn more calories, it’s time to wake up.
Because you can be skinny and still be unhealthy.
In many cases, poor metabolic health comes down to one thing, not having enough muscle.
So if you think you just need to lose weight, you probably also need to build muscle or at they very least sustain the muscle you have.
Because your body doesn’t just need to be lighter, it needs to be stronger.
And if you want a body that actually lasts building and maintaining muscle isn’t optional.
It’s essential for longevity.
Now let me show you…
If I told you there was something that could help you live up to 10 years longer, and it only took about 13 minutes a day, you’d probably do it, right?
People who exercise regularly can live up to a decade longer than those who don’t.
So if exercise is one of the most powerful ways to improve how long and how well you live, why are 77% of people still not doing it?
Here’s the truth.
You don’t need perfect workouts.
You just need to move more than you are right now.
Even just 90 minutes of exercise per week, that’s about 13 minutes a day, can reduce your risk of dying by 14%.
And it doesn’t stop there.
Exercise helps delay chronic disease and may even help keep your brain sharper as you age.
And the best part?
It doesn’t have to be complicated.
Walking, lifting, moving, it all counts.
Even a brisk walk is enough to start improving your health.
The biggest mistake most people make is doing nothing because they think it’s not enough.
Start small.
Because small done consistently is what actually changes your life.
Quick pause, because if you’re watching this thinking…
“Man, I love fitness… I just wish I could actually do this for a living…”
I’ve been there.
Before I created Live Lean TV in 2010, I wasn’t doing health and fitness full time.
I actually worked in corporate marketing and advertising for 8 years.

And I bet I had that same feeling a lot of you have right now…
You enjoy fitness way more than your actual job.
But you don’t know how to turn it into something real.
And honestly, that’s what stops most people.
Not passion…
Just not knowing where to start.
That’s why I’m excited this post is sponsored by ISSA, the International Sports Sciences Association.
They’re one of the global leaders in online fitness certifications, helping people turn their passion for fitness into a real career.
I earned one of my Strength And Conditioning certifications through them and I loved how flexible the whole process was.
Their certifications are 100% online and self-paced, so you can study anytime, anywhere, on your phone, tablet, or computer.
And for a lot of you watching, this isn’t just about fitness, it’s about purpose.
It’s about taking something you already care about to help others get stronger, healthier, and more confident.
And right now, fitness jobs are also in high demand.
ISSA has over 10,000 gym partners and there are over 73,000 open jobs for trainers right now.
You also don’t need a four-year degree to get started, just the certification.
Once you’re certified, you can join ISSA’s Career Connect community, designed to help you find jobs in your area.
The best part is they back it up with the #1 job guarantee in the industry with a full money back guarantee!
So if you’ve been feeling stuck, or just unsure what your next move looks like, this could be a simple way to start.

If you want to stay strong for life, you need to train these 4 things.
Not just one.
All four.
In fact, multiple clinical trials show exercise can be as effective, or even more effective, than some drugs at reducing the risk of heart disease, diabetes, and stroke.
So think of these like the 4 legs of a table.
Miss one and everything becomes unstable.
Let’s break each one down so you know exactly how to train them.
Want more energy every single day?
This is what you’re missing.
Aerobic fitness is how well your body delivers oxygen to your muscles and how well your muscles use it to keep you moving for longer.
In other words, having the stamina to keep going without getting tired.
The better your endurance is the more energy you have for your workouts, your job, your family.
And no, you don’t need crazy workouts.
Even brisk walking counts.
If you feel low energy all the time, this is your starting point.
Start here and build from there.
Now let’s take it a step further and talk about…
This might be the #1 predictor of how long you’ll live.
It’s called VO2 max.
VO2 max is measured as how much oxygen your body can use to produce ATP energy during intense exercise, based on your body weight, every minute.
VOâ‚‚ max = (oxygen consumed in milliliters per minute) Ă· (body weight in kilograms)
VO2 Max By Age:
The more oxygen your body can use, the higher your VOâ‚‚ max, the fitter you are.
Higher VOâ‚‚ max levels are strongly linked to a lower risk of death.
But most people never train this.
They stay comfortable.
And comfort doesn’t build capacity.
To improve your VO2 max, you need to start training with short bursts of hard effort.
Push your limits sometimes, that’s how you upgrade your engine.
Now let’s talk about…
If you’re not lifting weights, you’re speeding up aging.
After 40, your strength drops every decade.
Less muscle means:
Muscle isn’t just for looks.
Muscle is almost as powerful as cardio when it comes to helping you live longer.
In adults over 50, those with low muscle mass had a 40–50% higher risk of death.
But it’s not just about having muscle, it’s about how strong that muscle is.
The stronger the muscle the more force it can produce, which is essential to staying functional as you age.
Lift weights.
Your future self depends on it.
But strength alone isn’t enough, here’s…
Want to stay injury-free as you age?
Don’t skip this.
Stability is your ability to control your body.
Think balance, coordination, and control.
This is what keeps you from getting hurt.
Because here’s the truth.
If you’re injured, you stop training.
If you stop training, everything declines.
Stability is what keeps you consistent long-term.
Train for control, not just strength.
So now that you know the 4 pillars, here’s…
If you want to pick up your grandkids at 80, listen to this.
As a 40 year old, your strength can decline by about 8–17% per decade over the next 30–40 years.
So if you want to lift your 30 pound grandkid later, you better be able to do 55 lbs goblet squat now.
Ongoing muscle loss and inactivity can put your life at risk, but people who stay active lose far less muscle.
Having more muscle helps protect you from injuries, including falls, which are a leading cause of death and disability after 65.
Remember, maintaining muscle is is essential if you want to stay strong and healthy, and will help you survive old age.
That’s why weight training is so important, no matter your age.
The more effort you put in now, the more you’ll benefit later in life.
It’s never too late to start.
