Whole Grain vs Multigrain vs Whole Wheat vs Wholemeal

Are you surprised?

Lose the wheat, lose the weight

Research, case studies, and testing it on myself and past clients, re-affirms that eliminating or reducing wheat from your diet can be the solution to:

And yes, this includes the “healthy” whole grains that your government always tells you to eat.

The Truth About Whole Grains

Believe me, I was a bread-a-holic growing up as a kid

This included 4 pieces of bread in the morning, 2 more for lunch, and 2-4 more slices for snacks.

Remember how I told you I was a skinny armed, flabby belly kid growing up?

Brad Gouthro before

Well I can thank bread for that.

And I was a very active as a kid.

Damn bread!

William Davis, who is a cardiologist and author of the book Wheat Belly, provided the following conclusions from clinical studies on people that eliminated wheat from their diet.

21 day no wheat challenge for permanent weight loss

Eliminate this “health food” and lose up to 50 pounds in a few months

Participants who eliminated wheat from their diet:

  • Lost up to 50 pounds in the first few months of going wheat free.
  • Are being cured of metabolic syndrome and type 2 diabetes.
  • Are recovering from intestinal issues.
  • Showed improvements in cholesterol counts, bone density, skin conditions, ulcers and hair loss.

  1. Starting to eliminate wheat from my diet starting tomorrow and for the year
of 2015 (as well as refined oils and high sugar products).

  2. I don’t know the science behind this, but I do know this: when I don’t eat
wheat products or processed carbs such as white rice and pasta, the weight
falls off! 40 lbs this year at a rate of about 2 lbs per month. This isn’t
BS. The guy understands the insulin response. There isn’t time to explain
all the why’s and wherefores to you in a three-minute video. If you want
the science, go look it up. There’s a way cool thing out there called an
“internet”. Google “insulin response” and you’ll understand the principles
    behind what Brad says here.

  3. This is stupid there is not wrong with carbs just as long as you don’t eat
the white ones that are empty calorie at least that is what I was taught
and it make way more sense plus you don’t have to suffer from not being
    able to eat carbs

  4. Pleasant blog site here! And your web site a lot way up quickly! What exactly sponsor have you been applying? Am i allowed to buy your online weblink for a host? I want my website loaded up as speedily because your own ; )

  5. You can certainly see your enthusiasm within the work you write.

The sector hopes for even more passionate writers such as you who are
not afraid to say how they believe. Always go after your heart.

  6. i’ve been gradually taking wheat out of my diet, and after not consuming it and eating it again I can see how badly it afects me, but it’s been hard, it is a really addictive food, but the results come faster, my joints don’t hurt anymore, I feel better rested and focused, and I just won’t get fat even if I wanted to hahha

  7. Have you ever heard of someone losing weight–and enjoying 3 full delicious meals at the same time? Copy And Paste into Google Fat Blast Formula to find out more.

  8. great thanks can u tell me if the detox thingies work like foot and body as well weight loss stuff… Garcinia Cambogia Extract & Zen Cleanse?

  9. Thanks for the informative videos. I’m up to 207. Time to go on the offense and get this fat off of me.You are an inspiration. Who isn’t motivated to try and get in shape when they see a chiseled set of abs? I’m going to cut out breads and carbs (except for some vegetable carbs?), stop drinking sodas (this is killing me because I get real tired if I don’t have a soda every few hours like it’s somehow keeping me alive??) Make protein the main food source with small frequent portions.

  10. Yep I agree. i know the bad fat is the reason that stopping 6 pack coming outside even we work out well.

Between I saw an interview with body building champion where he talks about 7 odd foods he eats to keep his abs hard.

Since then I have cut my insulin requirements for Diabetes from 20 units in the morning to 8 units in the morning and from 10 units in the evening to 5 units and rarely have high blood sugars. I am also on a low glycemic diet which is very important for diabetics. I believe that soon I will be insulin free by continuing this healthy diet along with a good exercise program. Thanks so much.

  22. Hi Brad! So I assume you approve of the Paleo diet/lifestyle? I’ve been following it (about 85% to be honest), but have definitely cut out a LOT of grains from my diet and have increased my protein and veggie intake as a result. I’m not sure if I’m imagining it, but I feel like I’m not as “cut” as I was 3 months ago when I started…I haven’t lost any weight (nor was that my intention…my calorie intake is the same). I’ve researched it a bit and have read many articles in support of grains and more carbs in the diet for muscle growth. Some of my friends who compete in bodybuilding shows here say that hardly any of them go Paleo. So what gives? I’d love to hear your thoughts. I’m all about being healthy, but I’d rather look strong than skinny. Thanks!

  23. I would like to make my own homemade bread. Can you recommend a type of flour that would be healthy to use?

  24. Hi Brad, interesting stuff. I always knew bread was bad.
But now I wonder what would be good for a carb for Breakfast? No whole wheat pasta, no brown rice, no oats.
Basically just fruit and veg and sweet potatos? Would that give you sufficient carbs if you just have an apple and some eggs for Breakfast? Thanks!!

  25. I’m wondering if corn flour or corn starch have the same effects as what wheat does on our bodies… hmmm

  26. it does but not as fast as white or conventional whole grain bread. in other words, if you need to eat bread, its a better option

  27. I know you made a vid about spouted grains but my question is does that spike up blood sugar as well ???

  28. My coworkers laughed when I told them I was going to shed fat with Fat Blast Lifestyle, but then I showed them the results. Go and google Fat Blast Lifestyle to see their reaction. (It was epic!)

  29. pure rice does not contain wheat…sometimes the prepackaged (refined) brands may. just look at the ingredients

  30. if you must eat bread (sprouted bread is the one). however, i still recommend people get away from grains to get even leaner and healthier

  31. I’ve read that sprouted grain bread is low glycemic, is this also included in things to avoid? I eat and love organic sprouted grain bread and am losing weight consistantly, I’m down to just the last little bit of fat around the lower midsection and the infamous lovehandles and i want it gone.

  32. If you’re doing what you said in the last sentence that’s great. I still eat carbs…just from fruits, veggies, and starchy veg like sweet potato/squash

  33. I read the 1 star ratings on amazon abt wheat belly. These reviewers say that this book doesn’t stop at eliminating wheat, but most carbs in general. Is low carb diets like this really sustainable? I’ve had much more success by simply making sure that most of calories from fats and protein (combined) exceed calories from carbs.

  34. no, the majority of rice you buy in the store is wheat/gluten free…its still a starchy carb though so use in moderation

  35. Brad can you do a video on the “healthy” protien bars that everyone has now. probably too many to review, but what should we look for on the package to buy a better product. Keep up the good work.

  36. I read the wheat belly book and was shocked and had my eyes opened, I’ve completely eliminated wheat and most grains and sugar from my diet and feel amazing 🙂

  37. why do you say oatmeal is no good for breakfast?…..i thought its a superfood heard from other fitness experts?..im a bit confused….also why do suggest limiting dairy?

  38. Quinoa, millet, etc???? Yea or nay?? Or not sure. Because they are complete proteins and supposed to be good grains/carbs???

  39. umm whole wheat is considered a healthfood by some people (like my mom) but a lot of people are going anti-wheat so that’s my guess

  40. I would have guessed bananas. I don’t eat wheat, so we’re good over here 🙂 thanks though Brad

  41. Aww. Now I want to stop but I just bought English muffins lol. I guess that’s why I look like a muffin lol. You are what you eat 🙂 thanks for the tip brad.

  42. I’m going to try this! I already eat pretty healthy… but does this mean I can’t have oatmeal in the morning???

  43. Ok, I can do 21 days. However, if I end up having to punch you (on the gut preferably!). You will also have to pay my airfair so I can go do it. Deal?!?!?

  44. Lmao I laughed out loud when you poured the sugar in the bowl. Also when you refer to wheat do you also mean gluten as in seitan?

  45. wheat, and its a fact after i stopped wheat my blood sugar went from 125 for yrs to 81 yeahhhhh

  46. Then how to replace those sources of carbohydrates? (In Poland it is almost impossible to get sweet potatoes :/ )

  47. WHEAT – freaking disgusting… And I was TOTALLY A BREAD-A-HOLIC when I was little too! Thank you WONDER BREAD… with MAYONAISE or KETCHUP! LMFAO!

  48. BEFORE watching more of the video or reading comments: IT’S GRANOLA!!!! THAT P.O.S health food IMPOSTER!

  49. also people are telling me its not reasonable to bulk using the ratio 40/40/20 p/f/c? i keep telling them as long as i am in a surplus i should b good gaining lean healthy weight. whats your takeo n that?

  50. why have i only just discovered your channel now? holy shit this is the exzact same life stlye i am living. elimiating all processed stuff and eating the same macro ratio as you and let me tell you i feel os much better nwo bloated more energy and healthier. whats your intake on fruit? like is it okay to eat fruit like bananas berries apples? and when like pre and post workout with meals?

  51. why have i only just discovered your channel now? holy shit this is the exzact same life stlye i am living. elimiating all processed stuff and eating the same macro ratio as you and let me tell you i feel os much better nwo bloated more energy and healthier. whats your intake on fruit? like is it okay to eat fruit like bananas berries apples? and when like pre and post workout with meals?

    1. Sprouted is much better than conventional whole grains. And quinoa is better than conventional pasta and rice. But me, personally, i prefer to stick with veg, fruit, sweet potatoes, and squash.

    1. It’s interesting to see how many people ask the question, “well what can I eat then…?”…sounds like a cookbook with quick, healthy, easy, affordable, and delicious recipes needs to be developed 😉

  52. What wheat alternatives do u recommend for people who like baked products and are vegetarians like me? ( brown rice flour, coconut flour, etc)

love the site and ur vid’s. lost 10 lbs in the last 2 months following ur suggestions!

  53. Mike Dolce has a cookbook, its called The Dolce Diet Living Lean Cookbook, its pretty awesome with great recipes. Including oats etc. You should genuinely look him up. Would buy your cookbook too though! 😉

  54. Hey, I’ll check him out…it may seem like there’s nothing left to eat, BUT there is so much!! Sounds like a Live Lean cookbook is in order 😉

  55. I used to eat bread like crazy and I’d always get the worst stomach aches. When I stopped eating bread the stomach aches stopped too lol.

  56. I am almost 3 years gluten free. I work w women who have IBS or IBD and I can tell you that they all take my own 21 day challenge, wheat included. Success, less stomach pain and typically weight loss follow!

  57. I’ve been a fan of Dr. Davis’s book & have been off wheat for a while now… I never really had a problem with wheat, but it’s kinda scary how it spikes blood sugar so much & can make some people so sick. I had my first little bit of wheat that snuck back in some cereal I had yesterday, but other than that bit, I’ve been wheat-free for several months now. I think in small amounts it wouldn’t be so bad, we just need to really watch our intake. Americans are so heavy on wheat everything, it’s kinda crazy.

      1. Brad – possibly dumb question, but I think I have eliminated wheat from my diet… I only eat Ezikeal bread (on your advice), and my complex carbs are mostly things like rolled and steel cut oats.

What about buckwheat? Is that a wheat? What are the hidden sources that might not be obvious?

  58. I know a lot of folks are against wheat and really into paleo, etc. I definitely tried to the Whole 30 cleanse last summer. But it did not mesh with my Marathon Training. Carbs are my friend. And without them I got really sick. That was just my experience though, and I know that this lifestyle works for a lot of people – YOU included obviously!!

    1. I’m with you Krysten. I tried the no wheat thing, and I ended up getting weak, irritable, unfocused…and with runners? Carbohydrates ARE key. What bothers me most about this book is the emphasis on losing “up to 50 pounds in the first few months”…there we go pushing the quick fix again. All these “secrets” to healthy living…Sigh. I have wanted to read this book, though…to see how much of it is actually backed up with large, double-blind studies.

      1. YES! Whole foods. This I agree on. 😉 I’m personally addicted to crisp, raw vegetables…I used to eat TONS of bread, but I don’t any longer. It’s more about portion control and no over-consuming than it is eliminating specific whole foods from your diet. Our problem isn’t one particular food, it’s about the fast food…convenience…broken food system (processed=cheap, whole=expensive?!?)…lack of education…and all the “secret” diets and quick fixes that are out there. It makes me livid!

  59. Brad you should look up Mike Dolce of theDolceDiet. guy walks around shredded and doesn’t avoid grains etc. he is the biggest name in weight cutting for professional athletes in all different sorts, the UFC in particular. I think your great but its getting to a point where i almost think, what the f**k can people eat? kind regards and always a fan!

  60. wait so you want us to kick out all bread out of our diet weather it be white, whole wheat, or whole grain?? Right??

  61. I knew about this but every single day I fall back to eating bread or pasta 🙁 I KNOW I will see way much more progress and definition if I cut out that one plate out of my day…thanks brad for the reminder..will give it a try, seriously this time! 🙂

  62. trust me, i was addicted to oats as can be seen by my older videos. now that i gave them up, i have more energy and my appetite is much more balanced (no hunger cravings for more)

  63. fruits, veggies, nuts, seeds, sweet potato, squash, meat, poultry, fish, eggs…so much you can do with these foods

  64. yes, oats contain wheat. I know in the past, I’ve talked about oats being a big part of my diet, but since I tested this wheat-free approach (for over 6 months now) I have noticed a big change in energy, appetite, and leanness.

  65. if you don’t have celiac disease (a major intolerance to gluten) feel free to consume wheat for your occasional treat meals. I do.

  66. Hey Terri, go check out some of my newer cooking vids on my “Brad’s Cookbook” playlist. i have over 40 cooking videos there.

  67. Yo, can you go about 80% gluten free? I recently started a gluten free diet and ive only had 2 slipp ups. i have one cheat meal or day per week. Through those cheat meals though is it necessary to say gluten free?

  68. Hey Hey guys! I’m safely in New York City and thankfully made it all the way across the country Wheat-Free!! hehe.

  69. hey brad, what can we substitute for wheat? i know you get your carbs from fruits/vegies is that the easiest way? what about pasta, rice? still acceptable?
    thanks for the video!

  70. I haven’t eaten wheat for almost 3 months and I feel so good without it. I didn’t think I could do it, but I just told myself that I’d try eliminating it for one month and see if I could tell a difference; I definitely noticed a difference in how I felt and how my body looked so I am not going back to it!

  71. What do you suggest to eat in place of this for those of us who normally eat whole wheat sandwich bread?
