The Dolce Whey Protein Powder Review | Onnit:
On today’s episode, I’m doing a review on The Dolce Whey supplement from Onnit. If you’re looking for a high quality, grass fed whey protein isolate supplement that is sweetened naturally with stevia, this one’s for you.
Alright, I get tons of questions on protein powder. Specifically…
What type and brand of protein powder should I take?
Well I wish I had one brand that is a perfect solution for every single one of you.
Unfortunately, everyone has different budgets, different food sensitivities, different taste buds, and let’s be honest, a lot of you have different levels of concern over what you’re actually putting into your body.
But one thing is for certain.
You should be taking a protein powder post-workout for maximum recovery.
But not all protein powders are created equally
Some are created with artificial sweeteners and other fillers which makes them more affordable, and in some cases, better tasting…if you like sweetness.
While others are created with more natural ingredients which, just like organic meat and vegetables, are better for you…but this also makes them more expensive.
So today, I want to provide the Live Lean Nation with a review on a higher quality whey isolate protein from Onnit.
What’s The Deal With Onnit?
In the fitness space, Onnit is well known as a peak performance nutrition company focused on helping people achieve total human optimization.
There products are well researched by doctors and are put to the test by many professional athletes.
I had the pleasure of being invited to the Onnit headquarters in Austin, Texas, and was very impressed with their staff and facilities.
So lets put The Dolce Whey to the 5 point test.
The Dolce Whey Protein From Onnit Review:
There are many different types of protein powders:
Whey, Soy, Rice, Casein, etc.
The Dolce Whey is, you guessed it, a whey protein.
In my opinion, if your body can process it, whey is the highest quality protein because it contains all the essential amino acids (including the most important one, Leucine) and most of the non-essential amino acids.
Secondly, it’s also a whey isolate, meaning it’s easier to digest and absorb into the body as it’s more pure, free of fillers, and lactose friendly.
Thirdly, I like that it’s manufactured using cold processing and cross flow microfiltration which means all the essential nutrients to remain in tact.
Some other proteins are manufactured using high heat which can destroy the quality of the protein.
For type, I give The Dolce Whey a 5 star rating.
Unfortunately many protein powders are science experiments. So many ingredients you can’t even pronounce or spell.
However, when it comes to The Dolce Whey, it was a relief to look at the ingredients label.
First off, the whey is sourced from healthy, grass fed cows in New Zealand. These cows are healthier due to eating grass, not corn, wheat, and soy. And it’s also free of added hormones.
Secondly, it’s sweetened naturally from stevia. Huge bonus.
I have the Natural Banana Almond Flavor, so it also contains organic almonds and natural flavors.
The last two ingredients are maltodextrin and silicon dioxide. Since this should be consumed post-workout, I’m not overly concerned with the maltodextrin and the silicon dioxide is probably used to avoid clumping of the product.
For Ingredients, I give The Dolce Whey a 4.5 star rating.
#3. Macronutrient Breakdown
1 x 29g scoop provides:
Add in a banana and some maple syrup for fast acting carbs for an post-workout shake.
For macronutrients, I give The Dolce Whey a 5 star rating.
#4. Taste and Fixability
Like I said, I add the whey to my blender with water, a frozen banana, and a tbsp of maple syrup and it tastes great.
If you just add it to water and a shaker cup, it also mixes very well. No clumps. But doesn’t have a strong taste one way or the other.
I also used it when making waffles, which like all protein powders, made the waffle a little dry. Plus, since this is a high quality protein, I’d stick to using it in uncooked snacks like smoothies and ice creams.
For taste and mixability, I give The Dolce Whey a 4.5 star rating.
As mentioned earlier. Due to the higher quality ingredients, it is slightly more expensive than other lower quality products using artificial sweeteners.
However, if your health is of prime importance, and you can afford the extra few bucks, compared to other high quality brands, it’s worth it.
For value, I give The Dolce Whey a 4.5 star rating.
