On today’s episode of Live Lean TV, let’s talk about the 16 best healthy snack foods at the grocery store.

And yes, this list includes:

  • chocolate bars
  • chips
  • crackers
  • ice cream

Are you ready for this one?

But, before I share the 16 best healthy snack foods, I have to put this upfront.

Homemade Healthy Snack Foods Are Better Than Store Bought Snack Foods

When possible, it’s always best to make your own healthy homemade snacks.

If you’re not sure what is classified as “healthy snack foods”, or you’re not creative in the kitchen, your best allies are the recipes found in my Eat Clean Live Lean Cookbook.

This cookbook has over 200 quick, healthy, easy, affordable, and delicious recipes, including healthy snack food recipes such as:

  • mini brownie bites
  • paleo pumpkin chocolate chip bars
  • chocolate coconut cookies
  • cinnamon sugar paleo donuts

Yes, as hard as it is to believe, these healthy snack foods are Live Lean approved and the recipes are all in my Eat Clean Live Lean Cookbook.

But, I get it.

Sometime life gets in the way.

This mean we’re stuck and need to find an on the go quick snack option.

Healthy On The Go Snacks At The Grocery Store

In those circumstances, I’ve come up with the 16 best, on the go options, for healthy snack foods at the grocery store.

However, before you read any further, scroll to the comment section below and tell me what your favorite snack foods are from the grocery store.

All right, let’s go to the grocery store and get into it.

16 Best Healthy Snack Foods At The Grocery Store

These 16 healthy snack foods at the grocery store are in no particular order.

#1. Fresh Fruit

The Best 22 High Fiber Foods For Weight Loss

Obviously one of the best snack foods you can get is nature’s candy.

I’m talking about fruit.

I love any type of berries or apples.

These are great sources for on the go healthy snacks.

#2. Vegetable Tray

How Do I Break The Habit Of Eating Carbohydrates?

Of course you can’t go wrong with vegetables.

But you already know that by now.

So go grab yourself a vegetable tray.

Let’s move on to some other healthy snack foods and refreshments that may be surprising to you.

#3. Coconut Water

coconut water

Coconut water is nature’s hydrator.

Not only is coconut water a great source of electrolytes, it also tastes delicious.

#4. Coconut Yogurt

Superpowered Protein Yogurt

Next up is yogurt.

I like to go with coconut or almond yogurt, but if you don’t have any dairy sensitivities, you can also go with Greek yogurt.

Just make sure you buy the plain flavor of yogurt, rather than the kind with all the sugar and additives.

To add sweetness, simply add your own fruit to the yogurt.

#5. Wheat Free Crackers

Gluten Free Cookies

All right, one of Living Lean’s arch-nemesis, crackers.

To be honest, I don’t usually eat crackers, but if I do, I usually go with a wheat-free gluten-free cracker.

Look for brands of wheat-free crackers that contain only 3-4 healthy ingredients.

Even if the label says gluten free, it’s always important to read the ingredients list.

#6. Baked Goods Made With Natural Sweeteners

16 Best Healthy Snack Foods At The Grocery Store

Next up, the cookie aisle.

But always make sure you look at the ingredients list.

It’s important to look for healthier options sweetened naturally with dates, coconut, or honey.

Chocolate macaroons made with real ingredients, that are low in sugar, are a great healthy snack food when you need a quick cookie flavor fix.

Another decent snack food option is baked goods made with dates.

Since dates are naturally very sweet, they can give you the same feeling as when you eat a cookie.

Just make sure the ingredients list contains foods that you want to put in your body.

#7. Chips

16 Best Healthy Snack Foods At The Grocery Store

If you are craving something crunchy and salty, try kale chips.

For some people, kale chips can fulfill the salty crunchy fix often associated with potato chips.

However, if kale chips don’t work for you, another option to try are healthier sweet potato chips.

Just make sure you look at the ingredients.

A lot of potato chip brands use canola oil or other vegetable oils that I’m not a huge fan of.

However, it’s still a much cleaner and better option than most potato chip brands.

The best oils to look for include avocado oil or coconut oil.

If you can’t find a sweet potato chip brand at the grocery store, go with a regular white potato chip brand, but just look at the ingredients.

The goal is to find a potato chip brand that only uses simple ingredients.

#8. Dark Chocolate

All right, next up is dark chocolate.

Try to go with a dark chocolate bar that is 75% cocoa or over.

Since dark chocolate is very high in calories, it’s also important to not eat the entire bar in one sitting.

#9. Nut Butter

Almond Butter vs. Peanut Butter: Which Is Healthier?

Next up is a natural nut butter such as almond butter or macadamia butter.

When I have cravings, I usually eat a tablespoon of almond butter, then my cravings go away.

A lot of grocery stores now offer nut butter in single packets, but just make sure it only contains one ingredient, i.e. the nut.

If you can’t find the single serving packets of nut butter, grab a plastic spoon from the grocery store cafeteria, and zap those cravings.

#10. Coconut Ice Cream

LOW CALORIE Protein Ice Cream Recipe [WITHOUT ICE CREAM MAKER]

I’m sure you were waiting for this one.

When I eat ice cream, I always go with a coconut milk variation.

For me, it’s once again just an issue with digesting dairy.

Just make sure the coconut milk ice cream is not a sugar filled mess.

Fortunately, healthy brands of coconut milk ice cream usually contain much better sources of ingredients than traditional dairy ice cream, and are lower in sugar

#11. Gluten Free Bread Or Ezekiel Sprouted Bread

Best Bread Substitute For Sandwiches

If you need your bread fix, go with gluten free bread or ezekiel bread.

Since ezekiel bread does not contain any preservatives, it is usually found in the freezer aisle.

But remember, it still is bread.

This means it will still spike your blood sugar, so go easy on it.

Or if you don’t want ezekiel bread, go with a gluten free bread that uses potato starch instead.

#12. Fruit Bars

16 Best Healthy Snack Foods At The Grocery Store

What about fruit bars?

If you are craving a cereal bar, go with a brand that only contains real, simple, whole food ingredients, with no added sugar.

Pass on those Nutri-Grain cereal bars that i showed you in this video post on the top 19 misleading food labels.

#13. Naturally Sweetened Zero Calorie Soda

soda

I do not drink soda, however, if you are soda drinker, try to go with a naturally sweetened zero calorie soda.

But rather than going with a diet soda sweetened with artificial sweeteners, look for a zero calorie soda sweetened with natural sweeteners.

Once again, Living Lean is not about giving up everything you love.

You can make better decisions, by simply swapping it out for a healthier version.

#14. Water

Diet And Exercise Tips For Type 2 Diabetes

Welcome to the water aisle.

Remember, your body is made up of approximately 70-80% water, not 80% soda or juice.

Drink your water.

Your body needs it.

#15. Beef Jerky

Is Beef Jerky Bad For You?

Beef jerky is a great quick source of protein.

When you’re choosing a brand of beef jerky, just be sure to look at the ingredients list.

Choose the healthiest and most natural one you can find, and try avoiding brands that contain soybean oil.

Check out this food wars episode on beef jerky to learn more about what to look for.

#16. Nuts, Nut Mixes, And Trail Mix

8 Best Healthy Airplane Travel Snack Ideas

The last healthy snack food option is one of my favorites.

It’s nuts, nut mixes, and trail mix.

Opt of healthy nut sources such as almonds, macadamia, and walnuts rather than peanuts, since peanuts are a legume.

All of these options are delicious and contain satiating healthy sources of fat.

Nuts will be one of your best go to healthy snack foods.
